Flour Girls Baking Company Hopes To Give Rise to Village

MARION, MA —

Some might think starting a new business during a recession may not have the best outcome, but today’s entrepreneurs know that any success doesn’t come without risk and a lot of hard work. For baker Jill Houck of Marion those realities are as fresh as cookies out of the oven.

When Houck decided to start Flour Girls Baking Company in March of 2007 she had to overcome big obstacles, one of which was that she had no work space except her kitchen stove, and that wasn’t going to pass muster with practicality or the local board of health. The former Tabor Academy Spanish teacher and mother of two did some research and found a public kitchen to mix and bake her specialty cakes and cookies.

“I rent Dartmouth Grange,” Houck explained over a cup of Jim’s Organic Coffee, which she serves at the 4 Cottage St. bake shop she opened on Dec. 10. “It’s a shared-use kitchen and the hours are very flexible. It’s open 24 hours. Some times I go in at night or in the morning. You pay by the hour.”
